After finishing an assignment downtown yesterday, I decided to drive along Austin’s Congress Avenue in search of a photo. The evening light was casting a warm glow on the Texas Capitol Dome. The statue which frames this view of the capitol, honors the American Cowboy. It was made by Constance Whitney Warren, a New York artist, during a residency in Paris. Governor Pat Neff and the Texas Legislature dedicated the statue in 1925. How interesting. A female artist from New York, while living in Paris, created this tribute to the “rough and romantic riders of the range”. So much for stereotypes.
